Gresik, AAD Today - Two typical Gresik cultural works, Pudak and Dhurung Bawean, are officially recognized as Indonesian Intangible Cultural Heritage (WBTbI). This certificate was handed over directly by the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, Fadli Zon, to the Head of the Tourism and Creative Economy, Culture, Youth and Sports Office (Disparekrafbudpora) of Gresik Regency, Saifudin Ghozali, during the Awarding Night Komfilasi (East Java Original Film Competition) at Cak Durasim Building, Surabaya.

Official Recognition of Cultural Heritage

"Congratulations to the WBTbI certificate recipients from East Java. Our cultural wealth is extraordinary, from Sabang to Merauke. Indonesia deserves to be called a megadiversity country not without reason, considering that Indonesia is a country rich in diversity. We must protect this so that it does not become extinct," Fadli said in his statement, Monday (9/12/2024).

Commitment to Preserve Local Culture

The Head of Disparekrafbudpora of Gresik Regency, Saifudin Ghozali, emphasized that this certificate is a motivation to preserve cultural heritage. "The designation of Pudak and Dhurung as WBTbI not only makes the people of Gresik proud, but also encourages us to more aggressively promote and preserve this cultural heritage," he said.

Saifudin added that his party will continue to strengthen the culture-based tourism sector, making Pudak and Dhurung the main attraction that can increase tourist visits.

Meaning of Cultural Heritage Recognition

The recognition of Pudak and Dhurung as WBTbI not only affirms Gresik's cultural identity, but is also part of the Indonesian nation's efforts to maintain cultural diversity amid the challenges of globalization.

"This recognition is not the end of the journey, but the beginning of our shared responsibility to keep this culture sustainable. We will involve the community and the younger generation to continue to love and preserve Gresik culture," Saifudin concluded.

Cultural Heritage Process and Details

The process of determining Pudak and Dhurung Bawean as WBTbI began in January 2024. After passing through three stages of verification to ensure its authenticity, the official announcement was made last August in the WBTbI Determination Session organized by the Intangible Cultural Heritage Expert Team in Jakarta. Pudak and Dhurung Bawean were designated along with 11 other WBTbI from East Java.

About Pudak

Pudak is a typical Gresik snack made from rice flour, sugar and coconut milk, famous for its sweet taste and distinctive aroma from the betel nut leaf wrapper called ope.

About Dhurung

Dhurung is a traditional Bawean building. It used to function as a granary for rice or other crops, located in the triangular space at the top of the roof. In addition to its function as a granary, dhurung is used as a place to receive non-formal guests or simply to relax and chat with neighbors as a means of socialization.
