The British singer shared that while facing mental health struggles earlier this year, he used an appetite suppressant to lose weight, which ultimately led to a diagnosis of scurvy?a disease that's caused by a major vitamin C deficiency.

Or, as he put it, "17th century pirate disease."

"I?d stopped eating and I wasn?t getting nutrients," Robbie, 51, told The Mirror in an article published April 7. ?I was sad, I was anxious, I was depressed.?

And it was a bout of depression the Take That alum?who has often spoken about his mental health journey?hadn?t experienced in some time.

?The year started with some ill mental health," Robbie?who shares children Theodora, 12, Charlton, 10, Colette, 6 and Beau, 5, with wife Ayda Field?explained, "which I haven?t had for a very, very long time."

?My wife would say, ?If your depression could talk, what would it say?' It wasn?t saying, ?It?s my mum, or dad, or your mum,'" he continued. ?It wasn?t saying, 'It?s life, or tickets or the tour or the pressure or whatever.? None of that. It just is. It?s just a pervasive feeling.?

And beyond experiencing a depressive episode itself, the ?Angels? singer detailed the complex emotions of going through one for the first time in a decade.

?It?s been about ten years...I thought I was at the other end of the arc,? he continued. ?I thought this was the end of my story, and that I would just go walking into this marvelous wonderland. So for it to return was just confusing.?

And it was difficult to block out the noise his depression brought about.

?It can be overpowering," he said. "There are elements of putting your head in the sand and putting your fingers in your ears and going, La La La."

Now that he is on the other side, Robbie, who recently detailed his rise and subsequent struggle with fame and addiction in the biographical musical Better Man, emphasized that making sure he keeps his mental health under control and focuses on his well-being is of the utmost importance.

?The most important thing is for yourself to be okay," he added. "And not causing chaos in mine or anybody else?s life, like I used to back in the 90s."
