Robert Prevost Becomes Pope Leo XIV: First American Pontiff in Catholic Church History

VATICAN CITY — On May 8, 2025, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a 69-year-old native of Chicago, was elected as the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV.  His election marks a historic milestone as he becomes the first American-born pontiff in the Church's two-millennia history.  

The announcement followed the traditional white smoke rising from the Sistine Chapel chimney at 6:07 p.m. CEST, signaling the conclusion of the conclave's fourth ballot.  Shortly thereafter, Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti proclaimed from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, "Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum: Habemus Papam!" ("I announce to you a great joy: We have a Pope!")  

In his first address, Pope Leo XIV greeted the assembled faithful with the words, "Peace be with all of you!"  He emphasized themes of peace, dialogue, and evangelization, reflecting a commitment to continue the pastoral approach of his predecessor, Pope Francis.  

Pope Leo XIV's diverse background includes extensive missionary work in Peru, where he served for over two decades.  He held positions such as Chancellor in the Prelature of Chulucanas, Rector of the Augustinian seminary in Trujillo, and later as Bishop of Chiclayo.  In 2013, he was appointed Prior General of the Augustinian Order, a role he fulfilled until 2013.  

His elevation to the cardinalate occurred in January 2023, when Pope Francis appointed him as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, overseeing the selection of bishops worldwide.  His dual citizenship in the United States and Peru underscores his transnational experience within the Church.  

The conclave that elected Pope Leo XIV was convened following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025.  A total of 133 cardinal electors participated in the conclave, which commenced on May 7 and concluded the following day.  The swift election, finalized in four ballots, reflects a consensus among the cardinals amid a period of significant challenges facing the Church.  

Pope Leo XIV's choice of papal name pays homage to Pope Leo XIII, known for his efforts to modernize the Church's stance on social issues in the late 19th century.  This selection suggests a potential continuity in addressing contemporary global concerns within the framework of Catholic doctrine.
